With quick thinking and resourcefulness, Malate prepared to assist in the birth. She sterilized her scissors with alcohol before carefully cutting the umbilical cord. Once the baby—a boy—was born, Pesado and her newborn were loaded onto a pickup vehicle bound for the Tolosa clinic.
