The Man Realized He Couldn’t Ignore Her, But Wasn’t Ready to Help Immediately

From the moment he saw her, the man sensed something was off. She was shaking, alone, and had an unmistakable anguish in her eyes. A twinge of empathy and anxiety tugged at his heart, but he also realised that he couldn’t help her right then. His life already presented many obstacles due to his career, personal issues, and an extensive to-do list that left little time for other activities. However, despite his best efforts to ignore her memory, she persisted, serving as a continual reminder that there are situations in which leaving is not an option.

He tried to go about his daily activities for days, but her picture followed him everywhere. He saw her every time he closed his eyes; her frail physique, those large, beseeching eyes, the way she appeared to be waiting for something, or someone, to save her. If he did not take immediate action, he might never be able to forgive himself. But the truth of his circumstances kept drawing him back. He was hardly able to handle his own life, how could he take on more?

But something inside him would not give up. The notion that fate had brought her into his life for a purpose persisted in his mind. Perhaps it was an exercise, a test to see if he could rise to the occasion. Or maybe it was just the universe trying to tell him that sometimes, even in the face of difficulty or inconvenience, the most essential thing you can do is to help someone in need.

In an attempt to learn more about her, he started to enquire around. Who was she? How much time had she spent there, terrified and alone? His concerns were only heightened by the responses he got. The only information that seemed to be available about her was that she had been seen for several days in the same location, always by herself and appearing to be lost. She was obviously in need of assistance, but nobody had come forward to provide it. Everyone seemed to be waiting for someone else to initiate action.

The days went by, and his internal conflict intensified. Though he was preoccupied with her, he was also forced to face the realities of his own existence. He wasn’t exceptionally brave, nor was he a hero. As a mere mortal striving for survival, assuming the duty of assisting her seemed immensely burdensome. But each time he considered leaving, he considered the price he would have to pay—perhaps even her life. That concept was too much to handle.

He finally came to the realisation that he had to act now. Though he lacked a plan and all the answers, he was certain that he needed to take action. It was one of those times in life when you just had to take action regardless of your fears or the certainty of the result. He thus came to a choice. He was going to visit her, see her again, and decide what to do. Though he wasn’t sure if he could provide her with the assistance she need, he couldn’t do nothing.

She was curled up in a corner, seemingly hopeless, precisely where he had last seen her when he came. Nevertheless, something altered when she saw him. She raised her head, seemingly recognising him, and her eyes brightened somewhat. All of his uncertainties and anxieties vanished in that instant. He was aware that he could never, ever walk away from her. It made no difference that his life was disorganised or that he wasn’t ready. It mattered that he was there for her when she needed him.

After a moment of hesitation, she approached him cautiously, as though she had been waiting for this opportunity all along. He had not felt this warm, purposeful, or connected to someone in a long time until she nuzzled his hand. In that moment, he knew he had made the proper decision. Even though he was just able to save her, it was sufficient to save the entire world.
