A woman’s window would be visited every day by a little grey tabby cat who peered inside with bright, eager eyes. His fur was frequently matted from life on the streets, and he had no family to take care of him or a place to call home. However, there was something about this stray cat that drew the woman’s interest, despite his ragged appearance. He would softly knock on the window every day with his little paw, as though pleading for a chance, for a place where he might fit in.
The woman hesitated at first. She already had a busy life, full of duties from her hard profession. It felt too much to add a pet to the mix. The cat persisted nonetheless. Every day, without fail, he would come back to the window, and each time she saw him, her heart grew a bit softer. She hadn’t yet opened the door to him, but there was a quiet relationship that seemed to grow deeper with every visit.

The woman started to anticipate the cat’s visits as the days stretched into weeks. In an attempt to console the lone animal, she started setting out a little bowl of food and water on the porch. The cat took the offerings with gratitude, but he always went back to the window afterwards, as though the food was only a band-aid solution to a deeper yearning.
The woman saw the cat sitting by the window once more one especially chilly and wet afternoon, his fur drenched from the nonstop rains. He shivered and huddled closer to the glass, as if in search of warmth, giving off an even more vulnerable appearance. She could not stand to look at it. She was no longer able to watch him suffer. She beckoned him inside and opened the door without delaying a second longer.
The cat gingerly entered the warm, dry house, his eyes taking in his new environment with a mixture of relief and curiosity. He appeared to realise that this was the house he had been looking for, not just a place to stay temporarily. The cat started to purr softly as the woman carefully patted him dry with a towel, a sound she had never heard from him before. He seemed to realise that he was at last secure.
The woman took the cat to the vet a few days later to make sure he was in good health. The cat was in fine condition, the vet affirmed, save that it was a little underweight. After looking for a microchip but not finding one, the veterinarian assessed the cat’s age to be about three years old and stated that the cat had probably been a stray for a while.
When they got home, the woman made the cat a comfortable bed by the fireplace, but he wanted to curl up on the couch next to her. He was obviously in need of affection and friendship because he had been without these for a very long time. Oliver was the name the woman chose for him because it seemed to fit his resilient but kind disposition.
Oliver flourished in his new house during the next few weeks. Regular grooming made his fur silky and glossy, and he picked up domestic etiquette fast. He had matured into a self-assured and loving friend that followed the woman about the house and gave her a happy purr whenever she came home. He was no longer the shy, uncertain stray tapping on the window.
The woman thought about this lovely bond often, and how close she had been to losing it. She hadn’t realised she needed the newfound warmth and excitement Oliver had brought into her life. She was in awe of how something as basic as opening a door could have such a significant impact on their lives.
Ultimately, Oliver had saved both the woman and himself. It wasn’t just the woman who had saved Oliver. He had brought love into her home and emphasised the value of relationships and compassion. With every day that went on, their relationship became closer and stronger, proving the healing power of love regardless of the improbable circumstances.
